Schizophrenia is a brain disorder characterized by abnormal social behavior, and often times accompanied by delusions and hallucinations. The last place someone may expect to see a schizophrenic is on YouTube, broadcasting their disease and experience for the world to see. But that is exactly where Rachel Star found support, comfort, and most importantly- her community. She has been posting videos on her channel since 2008 to interact with her 25,000 followers. Some videos are question and answer style about the disorder, an in-depth examination of a symptom she’s experienced, or her latest adventure that had nothing to do with her illness.
In a review of her channel on NPR a few of Rachel’s followers were interviewed- a recently diagnosed schizophrenic and a family member. Both note that they have found solace and strength by watching Rachel’s videos. Just hearing about a person living, and thriving while diagnosed with the disorder has been what they need to understand where to go after diagnosis. Here the podcast below!
